the scrolls

It's New Year's day... which means, for me - it's time to read last year's scroll and write next year's scroll.    I've been sitting down every year for the past 10 years or so to compose a list of dreams, hopes, ideas, and projects for the upcoming year.

In the past couple of years, I also had the idea to start jotting down a short list of memories from the year before that I want to always remember.  I'm not going to share what was on the list from last year, because those are sort of private to me, but I will share some of the memories: ice skating with my new skates on the pond beside our home on Christmas morning with my husband, leasing a bright, new office space for our family business, the "Summer of Fun" at the beach with my kids, and running in my first 5k with my dear friend.

(that's the back of my scroll from 2010 - the kids wanted to add their own contribution and I'm so glad they did!)

I don't think about my scroll or peek at it at all until the next New Year and it is always a pleasant surprise to see which things on my list came to pass, and which things did not.  Some hopes are included on the list year after year... but that's the beauty of the scroll...

Here are some things I'd like to see more of in the coming year.

May your 2011 be a year full of big, bright LIFE and new possibilities!!

  1. Getting ready to make our scrolls this afternoon too! I'm so glad that you started this tradition.

And I'd like to add one to your scroll for 2011- send your far-away family more pictures! I hardly have any of the boys.

  3. Beautiful tradition Crystal! I have been doing some writing for the past couple of years, mostly children books but I like to write down my thoughts as my birthday approaches (usually less hectic than New Years Day, and still in January). I am usually surprised how many good things about my life I forget unless I write them down. Early Alzheimers? Hope not.
We still miss you, we wish you all the best for 2011!
